Besançon's citadel, city walls and Fort Griffon were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List on 7 July 2008. It was here that Vauban invented a new type of cannon tower: the bastioned tower. He built six of them, firmly anchored in the river and facing the hills overlooking the town. Tickets: €8 - €6 for students, under-18s, members of the Tourist Office (on presentation of card) and disabled visitors. Free for under-12s and jobseekers.
