The exhibition is devoted to the relationship between dance and drawing, looking at the graphic practices of dancers and choreographers. From rehearsal notebooks to large-format scores, from ballet masters' drawings to personal experiments in notation, the exhibition will explore the way in which drawing can be an integral part of choreographic practice, in the process of creation, transmission to dancers, dissemination and even preservation.
All types of dance will be considered, whether professional or amateur: ballet, contemporary dance, social dance, regional dance... all over a long period of time, from the century of Louis XIV to the present day. The project is the result of a research programme led by the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, based on the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Centre national de la danse: these three prestigious institutions are closely associated with the exhibition project.
