With 2,408 hectares of green, including 2,000 hectares of forests, Besançon asserts its rightful status as the first green city in France, with 204 m2 of green space per capita. While Chailluz Forest alone accounts for one quarter of the total area of the town, green is all around and is displayed in every possible hue right into the heart of the city, even in its narrowest of tiny lanes. Gardens, parks, promenades, tree-lined embankments ... so many invitations to leave the car keys in your pocket and walk headed into the wind, straight for the greenery.
