A pupil of Bernard Poyet and Achille Leclère in Paris, Pierre Marnotte worked in Marseille and Lyon before becoming architect for the town of Besançon (1823 - 1836). He remained in the town until his death in 1882. He excelled in the construction of a wide range of buildings, including churches, town halls and market halls throughout Franche-Comté, in an eclectic style in keeping with the trends of the 19th century. His passion for Gallo-Roman archaeology and medieval history enabled him to restore the Arc de Triomphe in Bisontin. Tickets: €9 - €6 for students, under-18s, members of the Tourist Office (on presentation of card) and disabled visitors. Free for under-12s and jobseekers.
