A very easy trail that takes you on a discovery of the springs that have fed the city of Bisont since Gallo-Roman times. The three springs are the exsurgence of an underground river that collects the seepage of water from the Saône-Nancray plateau, filtered by the Saône marshes. The springs form beautiful cascades: the Martinet spring springs from a cave, the Bergeret spring from a rock face... The streams from the springs join together at around 300 m in the Arcier, a stream that quickly flows into the Doubs. You are close to the remains of the Roman aqueduct at Arcier, built in the 1st century. More than 10 km long, it was mostly built into the hillside between the hamlet of Arcier, in the commune of Vaire-Arcier, and the present-day Square Castan in Besançon's historic quarter.
This work of art and science provided the city with a water supply.
A WEB application called "L'AQUEDUC D'ARCIER, PATRIMOINE HISTORIQUE" lets you explore the history and reality of the aqueduct. Watch and listen on your tablet or smartphone at https://arcier.visite.zone and https://vimeo.com/337016153 on your computer.
