Marguerite of Austria, Regent of Franche-Comté and the Low Countries from 1507 to 1530, was a key figure of the Renaissance. She embarked on an intense policy of patronage and surrounded herself with a circle of painters and sculptors who worked in Franche-Comté. The great families of Franche-Comté, such as the Granvelles and Bonvalots, the Carondels and personalities such as Antoine de Montcut, who were close to Margaret of Austria, were keen to patronise the same artists. From the triptych of "Notre Dame des sept douleurs" by Bernard Van Orley (1488-1541) to the Piéta by Conrad Meit (circa 1480-1550), from the Musée des Beaux-Arts to Saint John's Cathedral, discover the exceptional works of the Renaissance.
