Besançon's citadel, city walls and Fort Griffon were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List on 7 July 2008. It was here that Vauban invented a new type of cannon tower: the bastioned tower. He built six of them, firmly anchored in the river and facing the hills overlooking the town.
