To protect the left bank of the Doubs, which could easily be reached by enemy fire from higher ground, Vauban innovated by adding bastioned towers to the ramparts. The bastioned towers
have two levels. The ground floor consisted of a gun casemate with a vaulted ceiling. The upper storey consists of an artillery platform bordered by a crenellated parapet.
parapet. The bastioned towers are extended at the gorge by a crossing building.
